But heavier materials cost money and these toaster ovens do not feel as flimsy as some other budget brands.

All of the Black and Decker toaster ovens use the same type of heating elements. They work well and are suited to the small cooking environment. They provide mostly even cooking and they do it quickly. You won't, however, get the same type of fast, even heating associated with a convection toaster oven with Black and Decker's standard models. They do offer one with convection for about . Even with the convection feature I recorded a temperature differential of about 10 degrees F from the top to bottom shelf, but overall the hot spots are eliminated.

These ovens do cook the food well. All of the models have temperature settings adjustable up to 450 degrees F, which is hot enough to properly cook and brown food. When I checked the temperature at its highest setting, all models were within 5 degrees. This is pretty impressive for the price.

As the oven cooks, you will notice the exterior gets very hot. Again, this is a matter of cost. Insulation prevents this from happening in more expensive models, but with the Black and Deckers there is nothing more than a sheet of metal between the inside heat and outside world. All of the models do have handles that stay cool for safety, but this doesn't always prevent burns from happening. Sometimes it is all too easy to accidentally touch the sides or top while the oven is in use, especially if there are small children in the kitchen.

All in all, I feel the Black and Decker toaster ovens offer great value for the money. If you have realistic expectations, you can expect years of use out of these countertop ovens. As long as you don't buy one expecting it to perform like a 0 toaster oven, you are not likely to be disappointed.

I'm going to be looking at another Black & Decker toaster oven; this time, the Black & Decker CTO6301 Digital Advantage Stainless-Steel 6-Slice Convection Toaster Oven, a 6-slice convection toaster oven.

First of all, let's get the basic run-down out of the way:

The CTO6301 is a stainless steel convection oven from Black & Decker. It features a monochrome digital display on the front-right of the face, and digital controls underneath. The controls are intuitive for the most part, but I found some of them a bit tricky to figure out at first, but a quick read through the manual sorted that out in a hurry. The buttons themselves are quite solid; I really like the overall feeling of them.

The interior of the Black & Decker CTO6301 is quite large; it will easily fit a 12″ pizza, and is non-stick which makes it quick and easy to clean. This unit is quite large, so you might want to check out your counter space before buying this model.

There are a variety of cooking functions on the Black & Decker CTO6301 that are pretty neat. I especially like the "bagel" mode that makes the bottom half of the oven heat at half the temperature of the top half, making sure that the bottom of your bagel doesn't get too crispy. The oven preheats quickly and maintains a nice, steady temperature whether the fan is on or not.The temperature of the oven can be adjusted by increments of 5 degrees, which is quite handy and is actually not that common in toaster ovens. It's a nice feature to have.

The included pans are the standard baking and broiler pans, as well as a pizza tray. While the pans that come with it are of standard fair, regular baking pans will fit inside easily, which gave me better results. The pizza tray worked pretty well during my test, and I ended up with an enjoyable cheese pizza for my son and I in about 20 minutes. The interior rack can be adjusted and placed in a total of four positions, giving you flexibility in what kind of things you can fit inside. Since the tray is not attached to the door, in order to remove your food items you have to slide it out manually, but the door opens completely flat which makes this easy. This also makes the toaster oven easier to clean on the inside.

The crumb tray is completely flat and pulls straight out from the front, making it painless to clean out. Like most larger toaster ovens, the CTO6301 is easy to clean in general. The stainless steel makes the exterior easy to clean, as well. The cord is a bit longer than most standard toaster over cords, which gives you some flexibility in where you put the oven. Just make sure that it doesn't touch the outside of the oven, as it does tend to get hot, as most ovens do.

Is the Black & Decker CTO6301 Worth the Price?

For a mid-priced convection oven, I would definitely recommend it. It comes packed with more features than many of the more expensive ovens, and the versatility is practically unmatched for toaster ovens at this price point. Convection toaster ovens tend to run much more expensive than this model, so if you're on the market for a convection toaster oven, this is most likely a sure buy.

It is an under the cabinet toaster oven, which is an amazing space saver if your kitchen is suited for installation of an under the cabinet oven. Let's go over the stats first:

The TROS1500 comes in both white or black; both models looking very nice, although I personally prefer the white model as it looks better in my kitchen. The biggest draw to the SpaceMakerBlack & Decker TROS1500 SpaceMaker Traditional Toaster Oven line of toaster ovens is the size; they're meant to be small and compact, and installs under your cabinet or can be used on the counter like a standard toaster oven.

Under the Cabinet Installation

The under the cabinet installation of the TROS1500 SpaceMaker was tricky at first, I will admit. I had to get my husband to help me out with it. I would strongly recommend reading the instructions throughly if you plan on installing it under your counter. If you're technically inclined you may be able to figure it out yourself, but I'd still recommend taking a quick read through of the directions. It also mayhelp to have an extra set on hands to help, but it's not necessary.

The under the cabinet installation requires a cabinet with a minimum depth of 12″ - it will not fit if it doesn't have at least this amount of clearance. Please take time to measure your cabinet before buying this unit.

The heating elements of the TROS1500 are quite powerful, and when you're first using it, I would recommend keeping an eye on the cooking/toasting so you can get an idea of how quickly it cooks. It is quite a powerful little unit for its size, so you might be surprised. The toasting and cooking work quite well; my toast came out nicely toasted, and there were no complaints from me.
