Clean the area from time to time to avoid smudges on the cabinet. Let the putty dry. It dries easier if it is air-dried under the sun. After having it air-dried, you can now smoothen the cabinet with the use of a fine-grade sandpaper. You should polish all the sides or areas when wood putty was placed.
If the cabinet door has several embellishments on it, you should strip it off from the doors. This is usually done after you have removed the hardware from the cabinet. To strip the embellishments easier, there is a chemical that you can use for it. This chemical is available in the grocery stores and it is environment friendly. After you strip the cabinet doors, you can now apply the wood putty to fill in for the spaces or holes which were likewise created during the process.
After either sanding or stripping the cabinet doors, you can now move on to the next step which is to paint the cabinet door. Use color that will complement your new theme. Another option is for you to add another set of embellishments for your cabinet to create a brand new look.
To answer your question, should I strip or sand cabinet doors, will depend on the state of your cabinet doors. If it needs to be smoothen, then sand it; if it has other designs or embellishments, then strip it.
